Site housing Musk’s SpaceX base is now officially a city in Texas

The headquarters of Elon Musk's rocket company, SpaceX, in southern Texas, United States, is now officially a city with a galactic name: Starbase.

The vote on Saturday to officially transform Starbase into a city was approved by a wide margin by the small group of residents, most of whom are Musk’s employees at SpaceX.

The result was 212 votes in favor and 6 against, according to the Cameron County Elections Department, where the new city is located.

Musk celebrated in a post on his social media platform, X, saying that Starbase is “now a real city!”

Starbase is the headquarters and launch site for SpaceX’s space program, which has contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense and NASA. The company plans to send astronauts back to the Moon and, one day, to Mars.

Musk first introduced the idea of Starbase in 2021, and the approval of the new city was considered a sure thing. Of the 283 eligible voters in the area, most are believed to be SpaceX employees.

The electoral victory held personal significance for Musk. The billionaire’s popularity has declined since he became the public face of job cuts and federal spending reductions under President Donald Trump, and his car company Tesla has seen its profits plummet.
